Finally: another recording

Hi MMM,

I still love you! I miss you. Blah blah blah

It's comforting that microtonal music gets made even when I'm not looking.

I check more often at the Xenharmonic Alliance website, which you're all invited to of course. Between that and this, I'd say we got a good thing goin' on. Could still use a weekly podcast consolidating all the new stuff, but.

Anyway, finally! A halfway decent recording of Orwellian Spiral Canon No. 2, composed in July 2008, premiered disastrously in NYC, lost on a crashed laptop for a year and finally recovered, reconstructed, and learned to some degree of perfection.

This one's in 31 equal jones per octave.

The spiral canon part: every 12 measures of 7/8, one of the three voices enters one diesis (or 'daisy') lower than the previous entry. Slippery when wet! And you can tell the voice isn't quite tricesimoprimalizing with perfection, although what's really embarrassing is the udderbot playing. I was in a rush, sigh. Someday, with all uncanned instruments...

As you can obviously *cough* tell, the harmonic progression cycles between vague impressions of minor and enharmonic modes, using plenty of "orwells" (represented in 31 by the 7-daisy interval) but not especially rigorously.

Orwellian Spiral Canon No. 2 immortalizes the tragic tale of the death of Suraj and Guudu Prakash in Delhi in the form of a murder ballad with no murderer:

As Guudo swept the yard one morn, a rain-worn concrete plank
Gave way and plunged her twelve feet down into a septic tank

Her mate, Suraj, had nothing long enough to fish her free
He saw no choice but jump himself into the noxious sea

It wasn't that they couldn't swim, or that the walls caved in
but lungs filled up with sewer gas, instead of oxygen

Shall we blame the neighbor who had built the tank amiss?
Shall we blame the Everyman who doesn't yet exist?

Shall we blame the neighborhood for being so illegal
that Delhi doesn't care to pipe away (carry out) such matters fecal?

To speak of blame just propogates a world already done?
Come up with something less obtuse to tell their teenage son.

---

I want nothing but for you to enjoy it.

Sentementalities,

Jacob

Hi Jacob,

I think I miss a lot of the new microtonal music that's composed (I've only just joined this group today in fact), but when I see that you've shared more of your udderbot warblings I always take the time to listen to them. I really enjoy listening to your performances, and udderbot is a unique instrument which seems to have no traditional equivalent.
I would say I've not heard anything like this piece of music before, it's truly experimental to my ears! Although it's cerebral and difficult to find the pulse, I think I understand it after a couple of repeated listens. I dread to think what it would feel like to be in Guudo's position though..

You don't get new listening experiences like this every day, so thanks for supplying one. :) And yes, that means I enjoyed it!

Tricesimoprimally,

Sean
