Garritan tuning feature...

Hai gaiz,

In a very odd bit of synchronicity, I fired up the music computer today for the first time in a long time. Sketched some things, mucked around...

Checked my email a while later, and got a msg from Garritan about the latest version of GPO. In the list of new features, I spied the following:

What's New in GPO 4.0
- Tunings and Scala File Support - Put GPO4 exactly in tune with your ideas. The ARIA Instrument Engine supports control over individual instrument tuning, the frequency serving as the overall pitch standard, and Scala definition files, a standardized format for scale degree tunings.

It is a pretty low cost upgrade for me, and I'm pretty sure Rick McG used GPO as well. As soon as I get the upgrade and take it for a spin, I'll report back. The list of enhancements (besides the tuning) is really pretty deep, and if the tuning stuff works well it could be a boon to people wanting to composed semi-non-synthetic microtonal music.

Cheers,
Jon

Great news, Jon. Thanks for letting us know. This is a
lot less fuss than dealing with scripts in Kontakt. -Carl

I just bought it too.

I'll be installing tomorrow at the latest.

Micro and the choir sold me!

Can't. Go wrong for $50. Why can't all soft be so reasonably priced?? Sigh.

Yup, I just saw the same upgrade notification. Finally! I can hardly believe it!

I'm planning to get the new upgrade as soon as I can... And I'll drop a line when I have something to say about it.

Cheers,
Rick

Ok-

Here is a test spin with the choir using the included carlos alpha 24 tuning
scala file.

This is going to open lots of doors for me!!

I should add that my test example was recorded live in the aria player as a
wav file.
The "environment" is the default cathedral sound with a send of about 60%.

- the music is trivial - but the upgrade is not.

Yeah, this could have all sorts of possibilities! I did a quick rendering of a lemba[16] excerpt (originally done on Absynth 3, so the expression channel isn't set up for GPO, and some of the volumes aren't quite right, but I tried to balance them as well as I could without going back and modifying the MIDI too much).

One problem I had was that it doesn't seem to recognize "2/1" in a Scala file, but you can get around this by substituting 1200.0. Also, the range of the instruments on the keyboard remains the same, which limits the number of notes you can have in an octave.

But they include a 24 note scale - carlos alpha in 24.

Here is a couple versions of a tune I created to try this out.

bassoon, flute, viola, violin, hand bells, and percussion

and then the more strident Carlos Alpha version - this is a bit weird
because it was actually composed in 12-tet but intended for Carlos Alpha in
24 because of the problems I ran into with switching scales.

flute, cello, viola, violin, marimba, and percussion
