So i'm wondering, there being quite a few people making MIDI files on here, what programs do you use nowadays? I used Cakewalk 3.01 before, but i don't have it anymore as i've been unable to find the disk it was on, and it doesn't seem to be available for download anywhere. I've tried some free alternative, but those i've come across so far have been disastrous.

this is very inexpensive trialware - that I believe never ends....

but for the price if you like it its very affordable.

Could be piano roll only though - but... it works

A free MIDI sequencer that is sometimes heard of is Anvil Studio:

Haven^t tried the latest version myself, though.

I sometimes use n-Track studio:

http://ntrack.com/

It offers recording of both MIDI and audio channels and is especially useful when converting MIDI to audio since it can make an external MIDI device play a recorded MIDI channel and at the same time record the audio produced by the MIDI device. It is shareware where the free version has some limitations, but AFAIK the limitations concern merely the audio part (the audio mixdown especially), the midi functionality is quite good in the free version.

Another free one I once tried out an that not looks bad is Frieve Music Studio:

I have used Rosegarden sometimes, for simple tasks only and it was fine.
