Bach/tuning

Curious to see what folks here think...I'm reading a great Bach biography, and it mentioned a piece he wrote that included 2 lutes, plus continuo (and various woodwinds/etc). Do you think he would have tuned his keyboard to Eq temperament, to match the lutes; or, a Well temp, as he was reputed to have favored? Would it have mattered much either way? Of course, we can't really know, but it's interesting to consider...best...Hstick

It would not have mattered much either way, and we can prove this fact yet again with another listening test....:)

Lutes do not have many strong harmonics once they have done with their attack portion...so the signal to the ear does not give one a strong sense of "this is out of tune with the harpsichord"

OK, now come the attacks, from all sides....duck!
