Rationale in action

"How Many Nights In?" copyright 2008 by Chuckk Hubbard

Created with my free just intonation sequencer, Rationale.

Dedicated to Lena Constante, a Romanian artist and innocent victim of the Communist regime in Romania. During 8 years of imprisonment, much of it in solitary confinement, she looked inward to find some relief from misery and some outlet for her creativity. She also attempted to keep track of time, hence the title.

Thanks for checking it out.

This is looking very interesting!

One has to complie it yourself at this point?

Thanks,

Thanks.
No, no need to compile! -but it is necessary to install Python and Csound first, both available as free self-installing downloads.
It appears to work best on Linux at this point, but should run on Windows and Mac.
If you want to give it a try and need help getting started, drop me a line.

Awesome music, Chuckk! Is all the instrumentation done in csound? What
kind of synthesis method was used?

By the way, it should probably noted that anyone who wants to run
Rationale on Windows needs not only the python 2.5 package and the
csound package, but also the pywin32 package. After that it runs
reasonably enough, except for the error messages after playback.

The reason I haven't finished anything in rationale is difficulty with
getting good synthesis. I don't know csound, the soundfont engine
doesn't work very well, and there aren't many OSC synths available
(only one I could find was actually NI Reaktor). Maybe I'll finally
get around to learning a little supercollider to set up some synths
for use with Rationale.

Thanks, Cody.

Yup, it's all Csound. The harp-like sound is the 'pluck' opcode, a simple model that decays like a plucked string. The synth sound is just a few- get this- slightly detuned oscillators, all run through some stereo chorusing, filtering, and compression that I tweak as I compose. I'm a hypocrite for detuning those oscillators arbitrarily after all this work.
The yellow notes, which have that kind of low helicopter sound, are using filtered noise in a pulse that is relative to the frequency; the noise filter doesn't change at all, but the pulse does. So lower notes are slower, etc. That's why the yellow notes don't fit with the tonality of the rest of it; I was just listening to the rhythm, not the pitch, with them. I work in a pretty disorganized way.

I've been putting together (read: taking apart) a stripped-down version of the program to post to the Csound list to ask for help with that Windows error. I can't ask them to read my whole program for one error, so I have to take out 90% of it. What's really annoying is that the error itself doesn't cause any disruption, only the alert window.

Thanks for the note about the win32 package, I had completely forgotten. I need to make that optional. I only used it to raise the priority of the audio process so it runs faster than the graphics, and some people don't need that.

Pure Data is one other option for OSC. In terms of synthesis, it's about as complicated as Csound, but it's more intuitive as it's graphically oriented.

work, work, work.

Hi Mike, yeah, it's open source. Against my better judgment (the source itself being a hot mess).
It appears to need work in the usability department still. Funny thing about programming, the least interesting parts demand the most work. And by "funny" I mean "not funny".

Thanks, Carl.
My roommate at the time hated that sonata. He had perfect pitch and imperfect understanding of harmony. He inspired the title, actually, when he said, disparagingly, that he didn't go for out-of-tune music.

Well, it was easier than making a real video! Although I'll bet there's plenty of public domain archival footage of political prisoners throughout history that would be semi-relevant.
Next on the list is a tutorial video, but I have to choreograph it a bit and get over this cold.
Thanks for checking it out, and as always, let me know if you try it and have trouble making it run...
