New piece: A Door Into Spring

🔗Dave Seidel <dave@...>

Hello,

A rhapsody in distressed metal; a seven-second sample time-stretched, pitch-shifted and layered into an ambient canon. Hope you enjoy it. As always, comments are welcome.

Not conventionally microtonal, but full of harmonics, and the pitch shifting is all based on just intervals, making a "chord" on 1/1, 4/3, 3/2, 7/4, and 2/1.

Dave this is awesome!

I took the liberty of posting a link to your page with this description at
another forum with people who appreciate this kind of sonic exploration.

Dave,
Wonderful as always. It reminds me of bowed metal sculptures, only more beautiful by far.

Nice, thanks! Well, Frank Zappa referred to his guitar solos as "air sculpture" -- isn't that what all of us here do? :-)

Hallo Dave,
thank you for posting this intriguing and lightheartedly titled
bundle of sounds.
The sample lends itself well to the intervals and the layering.
Very enjoyable indeed.
A man after my own heart!
very best wishes
Lawrence Ball
PS hope the metal wasn't too distressed
PPS wonderful to hear an everyday sound inspring a composer

The way it seems to me, if the spring had no distress, it would also have no voice. :-) Yes, it was too cool a sound not to do something with. Thanks for the encouraging words.

Dear MMM guys and guyesses,
thought you might like to hear something MM of mine........

see "Stars Conversing" on:
http://www.lawrenceball.org/page/recordingsECS90s00s.htm

This is played in - as it happens - Terry Riley's rosary tuning, this
is JI and uses primes up to 13, from a show with the artists
Collective Phenomena in Liverpool, UK

many well-tuned wishes
Lawrence Ball

PS Also Dave, I wanted to ask you........ how DO you do your JI
pitch shifts on the door into spring
PPS Has anyone heard from Jacky Ligon recently, I can't seem to
elicit a response from the phone or email that I have from last year?

Very nice indeed, Lawrence!

It's quite simple in my piece, really: the time-stretched sample is rendered at five different levels of transposition relative to the original pitch. So in this case the pitch-shifting is not dynamic, but static.

Hi Dave and thanks for your appreciation

What I really meant to ask you..... was about the technical tool you
used to change pitch.
I for instance use hexedit to change the sampling rate of sound files
in the header block, which I find quick and very accurate, if I want
to make JI (or other kinds) of chords from one or a few samples.

v best

Ah, I see. It's all done using the "syncgrain" opcode in Csound, which uses granular synthesis to apply time- and pitch-domain transformations to sounds that have been read into memory. The code I used is in this zip file:

http://mysterybear.net/files/A_Door_Into_Spring.zip

Basically, I read the sample into a memory buffer (in Csound lingo, a "table"), process it with syncgrain, than pass it through some filters and such. But it's actually done five times, one at each pitch level.

Here's a link to the manual page for syncgrain:

http://www.csounds.com/manual/html/syncgrain.html
