I made some micro music! Also sagittal questions.

Hey everyone, I was playing around with Chuckk Hubbard's jisequencer
today and I came up with a new little tune in 13-limit just
intonation. It's the tune called Doodlin' on my soundclick page:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=293116 . The synth
is the reed organ on the Fluid R3 soundbank. Let me know how you like
it.

Also, I've almost finished laying out a score in sagittal, however, I
can't quite figure out what symbols I need for some ratios:
75/56
65/56
75/28
135/56
35/16
65/32

I also have difficulty understanding why the apotome complement of //|
is )||( . It doesn't look obvious at all.

Anyhow, thanks for listening, and for any advice/comments.

Me like. Thanks for sharing. Though I would say I'd
like it if you shared with something other than soundclick.

Assuming 1/1 is C, 75/56 can be notated F~| according to the interpretation of ~| as 225/224 (the standard value is 2187/2176, but the difference is about 1 cent). If you use schisma accents, 225/224 can be notated precisely as '|( (32805/32768 * 5120/5103).

> 65/56

For this one it may be useful to ignore the "schismina" 4096/4095. 65/56 * 4096/4095 = 512/441. That doesn't seem to help much, but it gets it into the 7 limit, which may be easier to figure out.

> 75/28

the same as 75/56, an octave higher.

E)\!! (approximation) or E'!!) = 2 * 81/64 * 32805/32768 * 131072/137781

D\!)

> 65/32

65/64 * 4096/4095 = 64/63, so this can be notated C|)

I like it. One suggestion to think about is that sometimes when you
have a 4:5:6:7 chord, I find that using 21/16 as the fourth in a
melodic line blends more smoothly than 4/3. Something to experiment
with.

Interesting colors though.

I agree.

In which case either 65/56 or 512/441 may be notated as D(/| or E~~|| or Eb~|), which are equivalent spellings.

I agree. It can also be notated exactly as D|||( or D#|(

> > 35/16

I agree.

> > 65/32

> 65/64 * 4096/4095 = 64/63, so this can be notated C|)

I agree.

If you have no two pitches differing by more than around 4 or 5 cents, it would be a lot simpler to use the athenian-level (medium-resolution) notation, which ignores the 5-schisma (32768:32805):

75/56 F|(
65/56 D/|\ or E~!!( or Eb(!(
135/56 D|||( or D#|( or E!!) or Eb|)
35/16 D\!)
65/64 C|)

The simplest answer I can give you is that looks aren't everything. :-)

A better (but more complicated) answer is that apotome complements were devised so that adding an additional arrow shaft to a single-shaft symbol would result in its being increased by something very close to an apotome /||\ less an 11M-diesis /|\, or (|), which represents an increase of 704:729, or 60.4 cents.

Since )|( represents 891:896, ~9.7 cents,
and an additional arrow shaft equates to ~60.4 cents,
then )||( should represent a ratio very close to 70.1 cents.

Since /||\ represents the apotome, 2048:2187, ~113.7 cents,
and //| represents 6400:6561, ~43.0 cents,
then the difference )||( represents 24:25, ~70.7 cents,
which is very close to 70.1 cents.

With the exception of the most common pairs:
/| and ||\
|) and ||)
|\ and /||
/|\ and (|)
/|) and (|\
and a few less common pairs:
)//| and )|\\
(/| and |\)
)/|\ and )/|\
most apotome complements are not particularly memorable or intuitive. You just have to memorize them as you use them.

I love it! Just the kind of stuff I imagined people making with the program. Not crazy about the soundfont sound, but I don't think that was really the question. I completely forgot that JIsequencer had soundfont support.

I must check out this sagittal notation, I've never learned it. Got some catching up to do.

Since this uses soundfonts the following link

http://clones.soonlabel.com/public/sfbank/

may be of interest - I have several gigabytes of soundfonts - some quite
high quality - available for downloading.

and the piece Cody wrote is interesting.

Don't know how I missed this. Excellent!
