Finally Finished: City of the Asleep Microtonal Album

Hello, old friends and acquaintances. I just thought I'd mention that
a project I began almost two years ago has finally been completed:
"Map of an Internal Landscape", my answer to Easley Blackwood's
"Microtonal Etudes". You may remember a few of the excerpts I posted
here quite a while ago; they're all on the album, though some have
different titles now. It's 18 tracks long, and each track features a
different EDO from 9 to 28, skipping 12 and 24. The music is not
classical...it's synth-pop! Sort of. I don't really know WHAT to call
it. But the songs are definitely structured closer to pop music
(though a couple are almost "metal"). Each song also features a
tonality only possible in non-12 tunings, so you won't find any
"meantone" or "pythagorean" music, just wildly xenharmonic and
xenmelodic stuff! Each track is also correlated to a specific
feeling/place in my internal landscape.

It's all explained in-depth in the download package available at
http://cota.transtagonist.org/releases.html . You can also stream the
album at my last.fm page, at
http://www.last.fm/music/City+Of+The+Asleep . As usual, my music is
totally free, licensed under Creative Commons, and encoded as
high-quality mp3s (NO GRUMBLING ABOUT HOW OGGS OR FLACS ARE BETTER,
PLEASE! I have my reasons for sticking to mp3s).

Also, I don't have time to check this board on a regular basis these
days and I frankly don't really like the "discussion board" format.
So if you've got any comments you want me to read, please contact me
off-list.

Everybody on this list should download this release. Igliashon
is one of the most capable musicians working in the microtonal
idiom today. Seriously people, this is required listening.

Awesomeness! I just can't resist the combination of xenharmonics,
strange meters and synths. Wow!

Ack, did use winrar and Windows 7 still chokes.

! C:\Users\chris\Desktop\w\moail.zip: Cannot create Map of an Internal
Landscape\.DS_Store
! The system cannot find the path specified.
! C:\Users\chris\Desktop\w\moail.zip: Cannot create folder __MACOSX\Map of
an Internal Landscape
! The system cannot find the path specified.

etc. etc.

I'm going to bring the files to another system. Is this Ballmer taking a
stab at mac users?

You don't need any Mac-specific files. Simply extract only mp3s, cover and txt files.

Quite simply it doesn't work on Windows 7 and Vista acts goofy as well but I
was able to get to the files.

The error message below is from WinRAR

But.,.... I was able to get to the files eventually.

I presume this came from the iTunes store? Or at least a Mac system.

Yes, Mac puts some hidden files (starting with dot) on the storage media. It is a nuisance but you can safely ignore or even delete them.

Very nice work, this album. The production values are really high, and you've achieved a really clean sound. I think I agree with Carl Lumma that it's basically "required listening" for microtonal folks...

Igliashon,

Sorry for the late reply; I'm writing you offlist as you asked.

I'm impressed with your work! I've only heard your latest album; I got
them all downloaded and I need to hear the others later. I'm working on
a sort of symphonic prog metal with funk, jazz, Arabic and Latin
influences myself. Except almost everything I write is in 72 edo.

And I won't dog you for using MP3; I do that myself for various reasons,
mostly convenience. (My music player/FM radio/poor-man's iPod also won't
play OGG or FLAC.)

Igs,

Finally getting around to listening....this is *stunningly* good
stuff--amazingly listenable and enjoyable IDM style stuff...the synth
sounds and production quality are impeccable. And you make the
weirdness of the tunings sound fresh and natural and not at all "ew
that's weird and geeky", but on the contrary, you create a sense of
the inevitable with them, and make them sound super rich and hip. I
can't say enough good about it, except to say I'm drooling, and that
that this is and should be essential listening to any microtonal
artists, and that it is a model of it's kind. BRAVO!

Warmly,
Aaron.
