New composition: "Loving County, Texas"

I *promise* I'll get a better place to host my music files eventually,
but I have it here for now. I posted an incomplete file in Tuning, so if
you're there, I have a completed rough draft here:

http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/dawier

This is the third completed piece from the "Walking the Cat"
project/demo in the works. The file, in mp3 format is fourth on the
list, not counting other folder, just over three minutes in length. It's
an attempt at a semi-serialist, neo-impressionist work inspired by
photos and descriptions from least populous county in the USA:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loving_County,_Texas (see also
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/25/national/25loving.html ).

It is scored for an all-bass chamber ensemble: bass flute, Heckelphone
(bass oboe), bass clarinet, contrabassoon, bass trombone, tuba in BBb
(using the seventh harmonic a few times), Bösendorfer grand piano with
C0 extension, timpani, bass drum, oud, four contrabasses. No notes
higher than Ab4 are used.

"Loving" is in 72-edo 11 faux-limit JI (with single approximated 13th
and 17th harmonics) versus 12-equal (24 in the oud part), and I use a
tone row in various transformations in the final minute. I sequenced
this with Noteworthy again and recorded it off of my Roland EXR-40 OR,
which has a bunch of Middle Eastern instruments like that oud.

I recommend listening to this with headphones or a speaker system with a
subwoofer. I also quote a certain Beethoven ditty and the "Hendrix
chord"; you might catch them both. Enjoy!

~D.

From Robert. For some reason or another I am unable to play any of
the pieces in your briefcase. You might already know this but the
state of Texas has its own music site which is quite a good model
for the other 49 states to emulate. It is:

Robert and everyone else,

I'm hosting three of my tunes here:

http://www.myspace.com/dannywier

It's MySpace, and they only let you upload six sound files, but feel
free to add me. Also, thanks for the link; I've been needing to keep
that in mind. If only this band I'm in (I'm bassist, vocalist and
keyboardist) didn't have such so much trouble keeping a drummer.

From. Robert. Of the 3 pieces at MySpace I preferred The
Waterloo Rag but I have been a fan of ragtime for the last
30 years. I have a midi collection of about 2,000 ragtime
midis which I occasionally use when I carry out microtonal
sound harmonic experiments. I find them easier to tolerate when
carrying out a long series of repetitive experiments.

Danny,

I enjoyed this piece, in spite of it being kind of on the 'dark side'....

Best,
Aaron.

An ominous work, well scored and spatially realized.
Thanks for sharing, Danny.

Cheers,
Aaron

Thanks to both Aarons, Kraig and Robert.

I used to have these ominous dreams of giant pianos. One of them had as
its lowest note C-1, or about 8.18 Hz (also MIDI note no. 0). I don't
actually use a C-1 in this, though the C0-G0-C1 piano chord at the end
does have C-1 has a resultant.

To me, the grind of those double basses reminds me of an old pickup
truck idling. I don't know if it would sound like that with real
instruments as opposed to a synth, but I like that accidental effect.
