hah, that's a good one! ;-)

the short answer is that it's the basic interval measurement
in Indian music, there being 22 of them in an "octave"
(instead of the 12 in the usual western scale).

the consensus today is that these are n o t equal
sizes. most Indian theorists and scholars of their
work categorize intervals in Indian scales into 3 basic
step-sizes, which are thus 3 different-sized srutis,
approximately 22, 70, and 90 cents.

see my webpage "5-Limit Implications of Ancient Indian Tuning"
http://www.ixpres.com/interval/monzo/indian/indian.htm

and the related dialog, mostly between me and Paul Erlich,
"The Indian sruti system as a periodicity-block"
http://www.ixpres.com/interval/td/erlich/srutipblock.htm

Paul gives what is probably the most "correct" interpretation
of the rational logic behind the Indian sruti system.

there's been a lot of discussion of srutis over on the
main tuning list
/tuning

here's a fuller answer that i gave one of those times:

That original explanation was recently questioned by an Indian musician
friend of mine, so I thought maybe I forgot.

I forget alot about tuning, all the time. Forgive my ineptitude, and lack of
understanding.

Matter of fact, I feel pretty awful about the whole thing. Tell you what I'm
gonna do for you Monz.

I'm a gonna build me a bed of nails. Not a bed of a thousand nails, each
nail tip supporting mere ounces. I'm a gonna use just two nails Joe. One
less than Jesus. Plus (+), I'm gonna run jump and fall on those two nails,
just for the extree penitence.

Sorry Joe.

nope, George, that's not enough. have to think of something even
more penitential.

i know ... you'll be forced to listen to 12edo music *while*
you "run jump and fall on those two nails". how 'bout if we
make it s e r i a l 12edo music?

;-P
