A while back there was some talk of the African "kora" on this list, and I
happened across something that is related to that instrument.

For those of you who might (A) happen to be hanging around San Jose
(California) next Thursday night and (B) can handle a smoky atmosphere for
a couple of hours... There will be a private screening of the following
short 16mm film, along with some others that are related to ethnic music &
dance.

For further information, I direct your attention to the Academic Film
Archive of North America: http://www.afana.org

On the same program are films on Cajun music, Indian dance, and a Greek festival.

'Alhaji Bai Konte' (1978) 12m, dir. Oliver Franklin. Konte was the first
Gambian kora player to tour the United States, and played at Woodstock.
He played in the Casamance style, and died in 1986. [...] "Alhaji Bai
Konte's records were one of the first that turned me on to the griot/kora
tradition of Gambia, and - indeed - led me down the primrose path of ethnic
music pursuits...along with Hamza El Din, whose Nubian oud and singing
totally mesmerized me at a concert in San Francisco back in '69 or '70..."

Pretty funny: I'm driving up from San Diego, leaving Thursday morning, and arriving in SJ whenever it is we arrive. If we're not blitzed and we get checked in and whatnot, I'll see about making the show...

Cheers,
