On Coras and other gourd/African harps

List,

The cora (sometimes 'kora'?) is an *amazing* instrument with a deep history, and must certainly be a ripe field for new (microtonal, obviously) music. I had the pleasure of hearing a spectacular young player in San Francisco a couple of years ago, and I'll try to find out info. I may have info on building them, related to a place in Berkeley that specialized in gourd art/instruments - they have at least two books on making musical instruments, IIRC.

Berkeley has a big African musical community, and there are good cora *and* mbira players up there. I'll see what I can dig up and report back at some time in the future...

Cheers,
Jon
