Dammit, I work hard at composing . . .

Saying that music is "fun" (even if you are essentially doing it as your
"hobby") is over-simplifying. Well, I suppose it is ALL the time for certain
kinds of musicians. For me it is often fun, but more than occasionally, it's
work, and sometimes mildly torturous.

Anyway, these moral arguments are silly. It's all about the market. If
Artist X blows your mind, and the only way to get Arist X's music is by
buying a CD, you will pay, even if Artist X is independently wealthy and has
no financial need to publish their work. At least, this is true of most
people.

I wouldn't say the moral arguments are silly, but maybe they are
irrelevant, considering the conclusion...

I'll buy you a diamond ring my friend
If it makes you feel all right
I'll get you anything my friend
If it makes you feel all right
'Cause I don't care too much for money
For money can't buy me love

Cheers,

"give me money, that's what i want"

well maybe i was being harsh in my youth. I think now i realize that people are not always consistent and within us all is an "inner commune" that different parts of come to the surface at different times?

Well, "Can't Buy Me Love" was written by Lennon and McCartney
in the early sixties, while "Money (That's What I Want)" was a
Motown hit from the late 50's written by somebody else. And
I tend to hear the latter as bitter irony. I think the Beatles recorded
them in reverse order, but I don't know and I'm not a Beatles fan to
begin with, so there's part of my inner commune surfacing for
you!

And of course, it is possible to express the idealistic view that
money can't buy love, and is thus ultimately worthless, while also
acknowledging that possessing money makes a number of areas of life
more pleasant without being self-contradictory or insincere.
