I'm stunned. I was just talking to him recently about setting up some performances
here on the East Coast this Fall.

From the LA Times:

Pair held in fatal stabbing
By Richard Winton, Times Staff Writer
May 15, 2007

Police have arrested a husband and wife on suspicion of stabbing a
45-year-old man to death in the parking lot of a well-known Hollywood eatery.

The incident occurred about 9:45 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Mel's
Drive-In in the 1600 block of Highland Avenue. Officers answered a call
of an assault with a deadly weapon and found Roderick Poole, 45, with
multiple stab wounds. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he died at 10:06 p.m.

Poole, of Hollywood, was walking with his wife when he got into an argument
with a woman in a car, said Los Angeles Police Det. Larry Cameron. Witnesses
told police the woman, with her husband, nearly ran over Poole.

They exchanged words and the couple allegedly attacked Poole, police said.
Michael Sheridan, 25, allegedly stabbed Poole several times before the pair drove off, investigators said.

"This was incredibly dumb," said Cameron, referring to how a minor
disagreement turned into a killing.

Detectives later arrested Sheridan and his wife, Angela Sheridan, 24, both
of Los Angeles. They were being held in lieu of $1-million bail each.

Hollywood, among the city's safer areas, has seen a 5% increase in violent
crime so far in 2007. Poole's killing was the sixth in the district this year.

Rod and i had spend many years together and at one time we represented the microtonal community of Los Angeles.
We shared many concerts, playing together albeit not enough, and many of the struggles of dealing with a new music community that couldn't figure out how to place us.
He was an exceptional guitar player and worked with a refretted Martin tuned to a 17 tone 7-limit tuning he had worked out.
While his work was often criticized for being repetitive, i found his work exceptionally mesmerizing and innovative.
He was more concerned with exploring the nature of what tuning offered than in filling in former styles with new intervals.
He was more like an artist who say, when they work with glass, are more concerned with what glass does, than trying to make it
do what other materials traditionally might. He was not one to look back which could be heard in how radically different his earlier 12-tone guitar music sounded
He was a constant explorer, experimenting with different open string tunings, and a great variety of techniques.
constantly changing timbres within his finger picking style.
I don't think a single day went by when he didn't play for over an hour or two.
I had just given someone in Berlin his e-mail who was attempting to contact him about playing there.

Me too! I think it's his 'Christmas '96' album that almost made
me crash my car... I'll have to dig that up.

December '96!! Death Adder is also good. I don't have
this new one.

Kraig, is his wife OK, and is there a way we could hold a
CD sale for her benefit or something?

A tribute page for Rod, since he never had a web page and the LA Times doesn't archive their articles.

Yes, but more out there in the USA, centre of world imperialism, and the
places it has 'liberated'
than in most of the rest of the world

Hey,

It takes a very special person to turn the tragic loss of a fellow artist - a fellow human being - into an opportunity for grade-school soapbox oration. There are better places and times to make a point like this.

🔗Julian Silverman <julian.silverman@...>

5/16/2007 10:01:44 AM

I am not a special person. One of our fellow-artists used the
opportunity of this terrible, terrible event, to comment about what goes
on 'out there'.

So I said: yes, indeed. But it depends where out there.

I live in a borough in London known as the murder capital of the UK. UK
is notorious for its rising murder-rate while the USA is acknowledged to
have reduced its rates. But the fact remains that, according to the
British Home Office figures,

"the murder rate in the US in 1998 was 6.3 per 100,000 people compared
with 1.4 per 100,000 in England and Wales.

The murder rate in London is 2.9 per 100,000 compared with 8.6 per
100,000 in New York and 49.15 per 100,000 in Washington DC."

Also: "The average monthly death toll for US soldiers in Iraq is 55.6
deaths per month while the average reported murders per month in Los
Angeles, Chicago and New York City are 48.7, 51.9 and 49.3 deaths per
month." Civilian deaths in occupied Iraq are officially reported as
totaling some 44,000 between the start of the invasion and October 2006
- i.e. roughly. 1000 per month.

This is not grade-school soapbox oration. It is either fact or, perhaps,
government propaganda.

I agree though, that there are better times and places to make these
points, and I do apologise. I did not know Rod, and I never heard a note
of his music. om what people write, though, it does seem we have lost an
extraordinary artist and human being. No offence to his memory intended.

I've added comments and information on contacting the LA county DA
to tell them about Rod.

I could use any photos to be added to the site. All I have is the one I took
of Rod performing at DMG a few years ago and he's at work performing,
his face isn't showing.
