A slow piece that grew out of an ongoing struggle to find my voice. I
went through a period where I felt like I was losing interest in many
of my favorite things without picking up new interests. In a gasping
fit I grabbed at Shona music from Zimbabwe, the Japanese Psychedelic
band OOIOO, and the Trance movement as bits of culture that still
satisfy me, and tried to expand upon that island of awareness.

Sounds were synthesized with Syntiac Studio Factory v4.1
(http://syntiac.com/) and arranged in Audacity v1.2.6
(http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). Tuned to a 7-note mode of the Just
Bohlen-Pierce scale, quantized to 2182-edo (Studio Factory's tuning
resolution)

How in hell did they come up with 2182?? Aside from the
fact that it sucks, it doesn't have divisibility
properties which give me any kind of clue:
2182 = 2 * 1091.

That's the second time you've ignored my piece in favor of nitpicking
about the method. I find it hard to believe that of all of the things
wrong with it that's the one that bothers you the most.

That's the second time you've whined because
before listening to your piece, I commented
on something in your post. Grow up!

This has an interesting retro kind of sound, sort of like music from the old 8-bit Game Boy systems. Actually it might make pretty good music for a mysterious maze or a dark cave in a game. Apparently there are actually some who use the Game Boy as a musical instrument:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_music

It's a bit limiting, since it only has three melodic voices plus a noise generator, but I guess that's part of the appeal.

Indeed. In a similar vein, C64 music has some wonderful timbres that I
can never quite reproduce. Rob Hubbard is another favorite of mine.

I think limitations are one of the most inspiring aspects of any
compositional tool. They give me walls, without which there would be
nothing to bounce off of.

Have you tried

Awesome. I did not know about that, thanks. I'm not too keen on the
price, I think it's worth the $40 difference to get the physical
object. I could be swayed by the demo, though.

Physical objects are entirely over-rated. -Carl

I believe he was referring to the QuadraSID PCI card (?).

I was referring to the SIDStation, essentially a SID in a box, with
MIDI in and audio out. They go in and out of production sporadically,
but they're usually in the $100 range.

I found out that to use QuadraSID I would have to learn to use
something I didn't even know the purpose of (VSTI) so I turned tail
and ran. I'm rather happy with Studio Factory anyway, I've been using
it and its predecessors for so long that I think I finally know how to
use it.

Oh, I see. I thought you might be talking about the MidiBox SID,
whose name I didn't remember until just now:

QuadraSID is also a PCI card with 4 SID chips. IIRC the
SIDStation only has 1. -Carl

Hey Tristan,

If you want SID-based hardwear, it looks like this is going
to be the be-all, end-all:
