Prelude in 13ET

13ET madness continues... I wrote this today and
uploaded it here:

Prelude in 13ET, my second piece in this tuning, is in
3/8 and uses the nice diminished scales I mentioned.

Nice piece! I will have to study it in greater detail. I'm glad 13 is
receiving so much attention. My initial fascination with 13 came from
the fact that it seemed so wrong in so many ways, but it has a lot to
offer if you are willing to look beneath the surface.

for instance the 8 tone scale formed by the pattern
2-2-1-2-2-1-2-1
the 7 tone formed
2-2-2-2-2-2-1
the nine tone
2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-1
just to name a few that might be just below the surface
then you can dig up the subsets of these

It cures deafness, and it gives me a headache (no, I'm
not kidding about the headache.) That's two good things.

Excellent! 13-EDO is awesome. I've been working in it myself lately
and should have a song to show for it soon. It's amazing how
consonant 13 can be if you use extended-voice chords that leave out
the intervals between 461 and 739 cents...the "2nds", "9ths" and
"7ths" are so nice in 13! And that 21221221 scale is so good for
melodies, it's like the 12-EDO minor and harmonic minor merged into
one scale somehow.

It'd be interesting to put together a 13-EDO compilation, since almost
everyone on this site has done some work in it.

That's because I haven't been making any microtonal music for a while
;-). But I recently gave in and shelled out for NI's FM7, so now I
can do microtonal synth stuff and I'm all excited about MMMing again.
Plus I've got a 15-EDO guitar being fretted in the shop right now and
a 17-EDO acoustic guitar being custom-built by Lukas Brunner in
Switzerland (he was cheaper than any acoustic-oriented luthier I could
find in the states), so expect a huge subsequent output of microtonal
pop-rock from me in the near future.

So Lukas Brunner does make microtonal guitars now? Good to hear,
because I sometimes travel in that area.

I would be interested to know in what price range his microtonal
guitars are.

I think mine is the first he's made, but he was very enthusiastic
about the challenge. He got a friend of his to make him a special
fret-template to get the placement as exact as possible. In $US, the
final price was $3725. It'll be the most expensive instrument I've
ever bought, but it's also about $2000 cheaper than the estimates I
got from US luthiers. It's an investment, that's for sure. I guess
I'd better do something great with it!

If you're ever in his area, you should say hello to him, he's very
friendly.

There's also Rhino which has great tuning support and great FM along with
other methods. And it has gotten even cheaper... only 70 euros.

I wonder why everyone seems to forget Rhino? :-)

It is the basic MOS subset of 13, i listed this a while ago

What makes it basic? Is it a chain of...?

5 units.
look at the first horogram which was also used on the cover of xenharmonikon of the fibonacci sequence.
It is the first place a 13 tone scale comes up.
Once you have your 8 tone scale you have all these 5 tone subsets and modes in the same way you have
the different 5 tones coming out of 7 tone diatonic.
This is ths great advantage of the concept of MOS,
you have subsets of subsets which have been practiced already for instance in the music of Japan.
and they just sound good

just 10 days ago i posted this here

for instance the 8 tone scale formed by the pattern
2-2-1-2-2-1-2-1
the 7 tone formed
2-2-2-2-2-2-1
the nine tone
2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-1

then you can dig up the subsets of these

It's a mode of a chain of the ~739 cent interval (or the ~461 cent
interval) in 13-EDO. It's also the scale that Easley Blackwood called
a "subminor" and is featured prominently in his 13-EDO composition.
Scales of the same shape (LsLLsLLs and its various permutations) exist
in 18-EDO, 31-EDO, 21-EDO, and probably in a couple others as well
that I haven't looked at yet.
