call for switching to Google Groups

🔗Carl Lumma <ekin@...>

Moderators and gentle members,

I would like to suggest we again consider moving this
list to Google Groups. It is much-improved since we last
tried it. For one thing, groups can be set to use
plain text, so that text diagrams appear on the web as
intended. Also:

* I strongly doubt Google lets their groups be used for
spamming. All three ISPs I've used to host my e-mail
in the last 3 years have at some point (usually repeatedly)
blocked incoming mail from Yahoo! Groups, causing me
to miss messages. I don't think I'm the only person
affected by this.

* I strongly doubt Google has ongoing problems with
delayed/missing messages for _years_.

* I strongly doubt Google delivers 20 copies of messages
because they 'pushed a fix for the delayed-messages
problem that wasn't fully tested'.

What does anybody think?

Isn't google groups just an interface to Usenet NNTP newsgroups?

Seriously, check it out. The moderator interface is way nicer
than Yahoo's, too.

Aaron spearheaded a push to move the list there several years ago,
but they didn't have a plain-text mode so I couldn't get behind
it 100%. But they've completely redesigned their service twice
since then.

No. It's both a groups service and a usenet interface.

I had trouble with it last time, too. But it's been completely
redesigned now, and it looks much better.

I'm not sure what you mean by connection... the archives would
be "forked". That is, if you wanted to search for an old post,
you'd have two places to look instead of one. I agree that's
a drawback.

I get spam, but it has nothing to do with any list I'm on or any listing of my email address anywhere.

I get it because "they" hammer my domain (biink.com) with email. Most of it isnt even addressed to me,
but I get it through a catch all account.

Google grps gets my vote for any tuning lists.

How ironic. I pushed for this years ago, but my calls fell on deaf ears.

Ah! I see you noted my earlier push here...sorry for bitching a few
seconds ago.

Of course, I'm all for the move. Another irony---my big reason then
was the search capabilities of Yahoo were nil. Now Yahoo has fixed
that, so I'm ok with Yahoo...so it in truth doesn't make a big
difference to me anymore.

The problem I'm having is, my ISP thinks anything
from Yahoo Groups is spam, and starts bouncing messages,
and then message delivery gets turned off, then I miss
messages and have to "unbounce" my address.

My previous ISP made a special exception to let Yahoo
Groups stuff through no matter what. We'll see what
my current ISP does.

Not deaf. I checked it out, but I didn't think it was quite up
to snuff at the time. Things have changed. It's a completely
different application now.

Don't let your past get you down. Support the movement today!
