Uploaded to my ZeBox page (with apologies to Gene) is a short
composition in honor of composer Shaahin Mohajeri, whose music is a
bridge between the best of Occident and Orient. Thanks, Shaahin.

"For Shaahin: Prelude and Rhythmic Study" --- santoor and small drum

http://zebox.com/jlsmith/music <http://zebox.com/jlsmith/music> (#29
down the list)

The Prelude is a santoor solo in 9/8 meter but with very free tempo; the
Study -- for santoor and drum -- is in a fast 11/8 meter. Realized with
Harmony Assistant software.

The gamut:

1/1

12/11

10/9

11/9

5/4

4/3

22/15

3/2

18/11

5/3

9/5

11/6

The mode used is a Phrygian-type on 3/2:

3/2

18/11

9/5

1/1

10/9

11/9

4/3

Very nice one Jon! I couldn't feel the meter but then again 11/8 is not something I commonly hear. I could feel the eights at least I guess :)
This mode seems to work very well, especially with the santoor sound. It is curious that your fifth 10/9 is a comma flat from 3/2, but I didn't notice that when I listened.

I didn't need to do all the things I did last time to make it work, so
maybe the site was just having a bad hair day then.

A pleasant piece, by the way.

Nice piece, Jon...as always!

I found the santoor sample a bit hard to swallow, esp. on repeated
notes, where it sounded really annoyingly "xeroxed"...othere than
that, I really like what your 'ism' is in this piece.

Best,
Aaron
