Harmony Assistant

Here is a question for people using Harmony Assistant.

When using a rule set for a JI scale do the Turkish accidentals create offsets from the values
of this scale or from the values of 12tet ?

Thanks

Justin:

"Thanks for the heads up.

Your info means I am unlikely to buy HA at this stage, unless I can find
a (convenient!) work around to achieve a particular set of pitches.

I will look into the scripting feature you mention. And let you know if
I can make sense of it."

I gather you're using the demo? All isn't lost. You can still define and
use microtonal accidentals, but it is a matter of doing so for each
composition, or measure, or particular note.

Say you want to insert a Turkish accidental -- like "comma 1 flat" --
into your score (which is using a JI rule set). The default of "comma 1
flat" is -20 cents, but you need it to subtract 30 cents from the JI
pitch -- which (by way of example) is the note "D", with a JI tuning of
204 cents. The result you are aiming for is to lower "D" from 204 c. to
174 c.

So, insert the accidental before "D". Now, from the "edit tools"
palette, click the "select" tool and put your cursor over the
accidental. Double-click on the accidental and a window "note options"
will appear. Under the "effects" tab, you will see the "comma 1 flat"
has been selected, and the "edit effect" button is lit. Click this
button and another window appears -- "comma 1 flat", which you can now
adjust in 1 cent units. Since you want the final value of 174 c. for
your pitch, 200 - 174 = 26 cents. Now use your cursor to move the
indicator over to -26, click "OK" and voila! The JI pitch "D" at 204
cents has been lowered by 30 cents to 174

This sounds more complicated than it is, and once you get the hang of
it, you can adjust any or all of the Turkish accidentals for a measure
or entire composition. If you are interested in further details, please
e-mail me off-list and I'll try to walk you through the process.

I have used HA for nearly a year and am quite pleased with the
microtuning possibilities, not to mention the sound quality (I have the
Gold Base digital instrument CD for HA). I really recommend this
software.

Best,

jls

If I want to score microtonal music, do I want Harmony Assitant
or Melody Assistant? What's the difference? Their website is
clownin'.

Carl,

Sorry about the delay, finally getting around to answering e-mails and
such. I'm going to assume for the moment from your question, that you're
interested in *scoring* capabilities only. My experience is with
Harmony Assistant -- which allows you you import microtonal fonts, if
needed. You can create "charater sets" with microtonal accidentals and
insert them into your score where needed. Below is a link to the Myriad
Forum, where this proceedure is discussed (be sure to read the entire
thread!):

Hope this helps.
