A new book by Ben Johnston (just intonation composer) came out last
December called 'Maximum Clarity and Other Writings on Music':

Joe,

Unless it is utter coincidence, you must have been reading Kyle Gann's blog today as well! List, there is a nice blurb about BJ in Kyle's latest, with a link to an interview of BJ by Frank Oteri at NewMusicBox. And wait till people start screaming about numerology and all that! :)

(be sure to catch Kyle's post on postminimalism too)

Cheers,
Jon

It's not new writing though, just a collection of the best of his previously-published writings. I had a copy through ILL but didn't really get with it. Actually, the NMB interview was more interesting/provocative.

>Unless it is utter coincidence, you must have been reading Kyle >Gann's blog today as well!

Just did.

>List, there is a nice blurb about BJ in Kyle's latest, with a link >to an interview of BJ by Frank Oteri at NewMusicBox. And wait till >people start screaming about numerology and all that! :)

It's an intriguing idea. (the notion of ratio-groups having individual meanings). The problem lies in deciding whether meaning is intrinsic or constructed. The materials of extended-diatonic Western music have been out there for so long that "we all know what they mean". So do they mean that because they mean that, or because we've learned that they mean that? the situation with the ragas would be even worse.

>(be sure to catch Kyle's post on postminimalism too)

It's a really intriguing piece, but I have some logical problems with some of his points. I'll probably end up blogging on it myself.

I remember talking with La Monte Young about Johnston's descriptions of prime number affinities (seven has to do with sex, thirteen with death etc.). While neither of us agreed with Johnston, indeed disagreeing in a number of ways which needn't be pursued here, we did agree that if thirteen were to be associated with death, then seventeen damn well ought to be taxes.

Hey KG, thanks for this blog on the nature of post-minimalism. It really
struck a chord with me (pun intended), and I'll be digesting it for the next
few weeks :)

"This makes a certain sense (although, 13 = death?), which Frank
teases out well during the interview. For many years I've had a
fascination with the "meanings" of prime numbers, such as those
applied by the great/notorious qabalistic crackpot Aleister Crowley:"

Duh, Kyle.

13 is an archetypal feminine number, representing eg "Mother". Birth
IS Death. Or, so it has been said/indicated (;-).

And, please, don't let's start on who's a "crackpot", or not...

BJ isn't exactly glued up tight, is he? Talent, and Elmer's Glue-all
seem to follow each other around quite a lot, eh?

AC work on this subject is nothing more than golden dawn material which he printed under his own name , cause before when he gave credit to the source he was sued for doing so. he lost a fortune
so he bypassed it by claiming it as his own, and got away with it!

I wasn't clear that he had published some golden dawn material of a different sort because he was an open source type of guy.

When I hear people talk about personal numerologies, I
always wonder if they are unknowingly synesthetic.
Same when I hear people talk about auras. On a
tangent: I posted a question relating to
microtonalism and pitch > color syn on the synesthesia
yahoo group. Many people with this type of
synesthesia have specific color associations for
different pitches. Hearing a specific pitch causes
them to see a color photism or at least have a sense
of a specific color (many of these synesthetes thus
have perfect pitch - Amy Beach and Messiaen are famous
examples). So I asked the group what microtonal
music "looked like" and got several responses. Most
people said that the colors they saw when listening to
just tuned music were brighter, clearer, more vibrant,
etc. One person wrote that anything that wasn't 12
edo looked wrong, and he had a hard time even hearing
it as music!
