Baran: Gift of Rain (mp3)

Hello, Shaahin and everyone.

In honor of your daughter Baran, I have offered this short piece,
_Baran: Gift of Rain_.

<http://www.bestII.com/~mschulter/Baran-GiftOfRain.mp3>

The opening is in a kind of Shur, and in the conclusion mostly in
Nava, with the middle harder to describe, since the modes seem to have
their own logic -- and indeed I would be curious as to the impressions
of an Iranian musician.

May this music at once celebrate Baran's birth and carry a message of
peace and healing for her, your family, and all.

Peace and love,

Margo

Margo,

This is very lovely! I would love to hear this kind of thing in an old
reverberant 12th century Eastern Orthodox chapel, with plenty of
natural reverb on real bowed acoustic instuments....

Two questions-

1) did you record this live to audio, or do you also have a MIDI
recording of this (MIDI file)? If you have MIDI, I'd be curious to try
this w/early patches!

2) have you/would you tried/try some reverb plugin on this? If not,
would you mind if I played around with the audio file w/reverb?

BTW, anyone hear about how Baran's health is?

Best,
Aaron.

Hi margo and aaron

many thanks to margo for her gift to baran , I played it for her and she became silent with very open eyes and pursing her lips, whenever I whistle for her she shows this reaction , I believe she has a musical soul !!!

last day sara took her to clinic and the doctor told her no problem with an increase of weight of 600 gr and height of 2 cm.

Dear Shaahin,

Thank you for much inspiration from your music and ideas about Persian
theory and tuning. It is pleasing that Baran likes this piece to which
she gave her name.

This is wonderful news!

Maybe appropriately, my piece for Baran was my first in a new tuning
system which includes some interval sizes mentioned by Dr. Talai in a
discussion of Persian music. Your "shurist" tuning was an influence in
some of the middle portions of the piece especially.

I hope to record more pieces like this, and try some new things.

With peace and love for Baran and Sara,

Margo

Dear Aaron,

Thank you warmly for the encouragement -- and your helpful questions.

Actually it's recorded live from the Yamaha TX-802 synthesizer audio
output to sound card, with MIDI used only between keyboard controllers
and synthesizer. I used ecasound -- thanks for your recommendation
about two years ago that got me started with Linux sound! -- to record
to wav, and from there lame to convert to mp3.

This might be a hint to find out about ecasound reverb effects, which
a quick glance at the documentation shows are definitely available! Of
course you're welcome to play around with reverb for this piece, and I
know that Jacky Ligon has suggested to me that lots of what I do can
benefit from reverb. Possibly your efforts could suggest some things
to try with ecasound in future recordings -- not to mention optimizing
this one -- so I'd much appreciate this.

> BTW, anyone hear about how Baran's health is?

When I just checked Yahoo, there was a new message from Shaahin saying
that she is doing well with a good gain of height and weight. That is
happy news!

OK, Margo,

I couldn't find a 12th century Eastern Orthodox chapel here in
Chicagoland, but I have the next best thing--the amazing (and free)
Freeverb plugin.

I took your mp3, played it from xmms using jack and jack-rack loaded
with Freeverb, and did some equalization using xmms as well, because I
wanted the melody to come out stronger, and the fifths-drone to
retreat a bit into the background.

Hopefully, you'll agree that this really makes a nice improvement to
the overall effect! ;)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I think Aaron made a typo. It should be:

Dear Aaron,

Please let me thank you for that equalized version of _Baran: Gift of
Rain_, which I really like, and which indeed gives me some ideas for
approaching future recordings. The reverb is very effective, as I'm
not surprised to find out! With your experience in dramatic
productions and the like, you might have some special acoustical saavy
in these things, not to mention _Divide by Pi_ and so on -- and for
whatever reasons, when I listened to your version I could envision a
kind of outdoor performance. Curious, since reverberant spaces might
suggest some kind of building -- but maybe the feeling of space that
you gave the music might seem somehow _al fresco_.

Anyway, I'm wondering if I can use the controls on a Behringer
Eurorack preamplifier to solve the equalization issues at least -- if
not so skillfully as you. I tried shifting a few dials and noticed
that a high melody seemed better to stand out against a drone, and it
would be nice to be able at least to correct balance problems that I
hear.

Your version also raises a fascinating point of performance practice.
While the creative relationship between composer and performer is a
longstanding issue at least in the European tradition, where Josquin
was reported to complain about singers who went to excesses when it
came to ornamenting his pieces, for example, nowadays there's also
post-performance editing, so that a performance can change in some of
its attributes after being recorded. Thank you for making the most of
this.

Other exciting things are happening, like my finding out that one of
the scales in _Baran_ uses steps almost identical to those of a tuning
documented in the Scala archive, iran_diat.scl. It turns out that a
tetrachord there was 0-220-441-489 cents, while I used 0-224-441-492
cents. Also, I'm starting to practice on keyboard with my "Annika" and
"Lorna" families of tunings.

Thank you for a sensitive and brilliant interpretation of _Baran_
which I might regard as a kind of "restoration" of my original intent,
coupled with your special musicianship so often and widely evident.

Peace and love,

Margo
