Takemitsu

Speaking of composition, Takemitsu is a long time favorite...and, I didn't realize till recently that he composed microtonally. Check out "Bryce," on the Naxos CD "Takemitsu; Chamber Music." He uses quarter tones, and it's a beautiful piece. Does anybody know if he's got more micro stuff on other discs? Thanks...Hstick

the full version of "in an autumn garden" for gagaku orchestra is one of the lost treasures, also microtonal of the 20th century!

Yeah, I studied his guitar folios in school, which required a lot of
sliding, now that I play fretless guitar I need to get back on those
pieces since all the sliding will work a lot more smoothly.

Hi Neil,

Takemitsu also wrote the microtonal film score for the Japanese/French
film L'Empire de la Passion. It's on DVD, the one I have has French
sound but there will be also an English one probably. Nice film,
pretty actress too.

While we are on the subject of Takemitsu, one of my favorite film
scores is 'Gaudi', which has some microtonal material (more like 'open
tuning'/JI-ish material)

Is the soundtrack by Robert Rich? He has a cd of the same name ('Gaudi', one of my favorites).

Just saw this. It rocks. Soundtrack seems to capture
something about the architecture. Architecture rocks.

I think that i have mentioned that i saw In An Autumn Garden performed in full by Reigakusha.
It is quite microtonal and may be up with delusion as the other great microtonal piece of the 20th century.
It goes in a completely different direction than HP , a subtler one, yet is just as broad in its scope.
I find that i like his pieces of Japanese instruments more than his orchestral ones.
I have had more than one performer tell me how much they like to play the latter.
many are quite impressed in his skill as an orchestrator.
One arranger told me he thought that when he died the last one, in his book was gone.

Yep! One of my all time favorite movies, maybe my favorite
'documentary' ever...it's amazing how much it says with virtually zero
dialogue.

I think it was James Joyce that said that gesture is the universal language
