microtonal mod

Hi folks. I have been trying out mod (using the modplug tracker) for
making microtonal music. For those unfamiliar, mod is a format that
gives midi like commands to trigger wav files, so you can make music
with real recorded instruments. So far, the only method I have found
to make it microtonal is to record each microtonal pitch and trigger
them as usual. What I would like to do is actually send pitch bend
commands so that I don't have to resample instruments to get
microtonal scales.

Has anyone had any experience in this?

I can't tell if that would work. I tried downloading their demo, but
there seemed to be no way to start the program. I could read the
manual or uninstall it, but those were the only options. Do you use
this app? The reviews are great... if only I could figure out how to
get it to run!

John,

I use Wusikstation as well, as it can take any samples and retune using the standard .tun file format. But as to the above: are you aware of how to use VST instruments? This is what Wusik is. If you don't, you'll need to take just one step back and use a host program (usually a sequencer, but there are hosts simply for live playing) that works with the VST instruments and effect. There are many, many choices...

Cheers,
Jon

Thanks, Jon. No, I know nothing of VST. Is there a simple (preferrably
free) host program, or maybe a good web resource for VST virgins?

BTW, on this:

There are quite a few free VST hosts of varying quality. Some years ago I
surveyed a few of them, but I haven't updated my page recently. I suppose I
should keep it up to date...

I usually use ableton live lite or the ableton live demo. It can do
everything but the final mixdown, but I can record that from 'what u
hear' in audacity. www.kvraudio.com is a great resource for
everything vst. I believe Reaper is a free host until it comes out
of beta, but I haven't used it.

Thanks, Rick. I downloaded a demo copy of Spin Audio Virtual Mixing
Console, and Plogue. I will mess with them and see what happens.

Both Ableton and Reaper seem to be capable, and Reaper is quite
affordable. I guess I will have to check it out thoroughly. Thanks, Joe.

Sure. I was also going to mention Tobybear's Minihost
(donationware), or picking up an issue of Computer Music, which comes
with a free host and lots of other stuff.
