I have a new piece which might be of interest , music made by hand, for justly intoned bowed psalteries and electronics at:-

http://www.wyness.org/news/news.html

It's an mp3 at a high resolution. Hope this doesn't lead to conflict.

James,

This is really evocative and gorgeous!! I loved it!

You are really inspiring me to do more in the way of ambient JI
stuff. Thank you for that!

All best,
Aaron.

Hello,

This was really nice. I'd be interested to know what tools you're
using electronically (real-time? rendered?)

Thanks for the music,

Chris

Thanks Aaron and Chris

I used Waves plug-ins to clean up and eq the recordings and Composers Desktop Project (CDP) software to timestretch. CDP has a tool called Grainmill which I used for the granulated sounds towards the end of the piece. I mixed in Wavelab. The percussive clicks and knocks are the result of recording with DIY piezo contact mics. These act as a LP filter and colour the sound quite uniquely.

Live I play the two psalteries through what I can, usually a heavy duty Roland multi guitar FX pedal. I use Ableton Live or a Steinberg app to run the processed stuff from a laptop.

I'm looking now at 'preparing' the psalteries and some new bowed zithers I have on the workbench. This will involve the mad professor stuff with clips, wires, odd lofi circuitry and various tools to strike/stroke/bow the instruments.

I still go back to Kraig Grady's work with the resonant bowed string 'bed of sound' as the best example of what can be done with justly intoned strings.

best

james

--akj--> Where/how did you learn the DIY mic construction?

so, what's the recipe?

--akj--> Cool!

--akj--> Indeed, it's some fine sounding stuff. BTW, Kraig, are
there rumours of another meta-meantone project, or any project
coming from you (perhaps another midi-CD)?

Best,
Aaron.

--akj--> Where/how did you learn the DIY mic construction?

jw - the piezos are the sort you get from Radio Shack in the US for a dollar or so and are simply wired to a standard jack. Here's a link:-

http://home.earthlink.net/~erinys/contactmic.html

I use two to get a pseudo stereo recording.

--akj--> And did you say that the psalteries were homeade too? If

jw - I used this book:-

Hopkin, Bart, Making Simple Musical Instruments. Lark Books 1995.

Even as a complete beginner I managed to stick two very playable psalteries together. Just took time and effort.
