First, I'd like to apologize for not participating on the list lately, particularly for not commenting on the cool pieces people have been posting. I've been rather heads-down lately, and am just starting to emerge, now that I have some vacation time coming up, so I will try to do better.

Anyway, I have just posted a new piece called TimeWave Canon, which I describe as "a mensuration canon in just intonation based on Terence McKenna's TimeWave Zero". For more details, as well as MP3 and OGG renderings and (as always) full source code (blue and Csound), please visit http://mysterybear.net/article/21/timewave-canon

Best regards,
Dave

This kind of formalism is something that I find very exciting. Often
times, though, the result of a formal process is less interesting than
the process itself.

In this case, I think there's some fascinating stuff going on. It
starts off a little weak in my opinion, but at around 0:42 it becomes
so dark and dramatic that I can't help but like it. And be a little
afraid. Are you feeling alright? This is some of the moodiest music
I've heard in a long time. I like.

Glad you like it. I find that process can be a good starting point, but then I spend a lot of time making sure that I'm satisfied with the result. In this piece, the notes *sequences* were all completely predetermined, but I chose the scale, and where in the scale to start the sequence. I made several adjustments along the way on both choices before I settled. And of course I tried different instrumental timbres, and played with balances and so on.

It's neat that you hear it as moody and dark, I actually hear it as rather light. :-)

Thanks for listening.

Dave,

Very, very enjoyable music! And it sounds
so MUCH simpler than any of the numerology
on those links you gave. ;-)

I put it on repeat for the last hour or so,
while answering mail. Tranquil ...

Regards,
Yahya

Thanks, Yahya, glad you liked it. yeah, I felt I had to link to all that stuff in the interest of full disclosure, and because I like to explain my process, but understanding it certainly shouldn't be a prerequisite -- I don't really get it all myself! :-)

Very nice. It reminds me of Terry Riley. Might be the tuning...

Thanks, David. Could be, though not deliberate; I've like Riley's stuff a lot, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's used scales/modes like this one. It's also a little bit like hicaz maqam, which has always been one of my favorites.
