David Beardsley String Quartet Radio Premiere

🔗Glenn Freeman <glennf@...>

7/2/2006 8:31:14 AM

The radio premiere of David Beardsley's (http://biink.com/db/index.htm) 30-minute 2004
string quartet "as beautiful as a crescent of a new moon on a cloudless spring evening" as
performed by Christina Fong (http://christinafong.com) can be heard at 11pm PST Friday
July 7th on KALW 91.7 FM's "Music from Other Minds" in San Francisco and also via the
internet at http://rchrd.com/mfom.

David's piece was submitted for a project initiated on the "Why Patterns?" discussion list.
"For Feldman" (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F3T3PK) is second in a series
featuring previously unreleased works by emerging composers. This 96kHz|24bit Audio
DVD (plays in any DVD player) contains 4 world premiere recordings and the only available
release of 3 works by Morton Feldman.

One day after dinner, Morton was sitting at the kitchen table having a taste of water,
thinking about a carpet or two, when electricity discontinued. Sun set and awareness
gradually changed to wonder as he saw the beauty of the crescent of a new moon on a
cloudless spring evening passing by the windows. Many years later, Morton awoke on his
couch from an afternoon nap. Venus, the cat, leapt off the window where she was sleeping
permitting sunlight to pass through a glass reclining on a table. "That is" he thought, "as
beautiful as a crescent of a new moon on a cloudless spring evening".

This piece is tuned to the system known as Just Intonation, rational intervals from the
harmonic series.

Hi David,

Very nice. I love the part where it sounds like the
cello and viola, the viola holding a 7/6 above
the cello for a long time, then at 12:07 moving up
to a 5/4 which it holds for a long time.

Just listened to this beautiful piece. Well done to David for getting this recorded. I'd love to hear it live or even over a four channel system like the one we have in Jedburgh's Arts Centre.

I get schoolmarmish replies when I submit polyphonic JI works and have to resort to using sine tones and FM synths of which more later. I have however worked out a feasible scordatura for each of the instruments of a 2vl, 2vla and vcl string quintet, ie 20 individual strings, which gives me the tones of a 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 Eikosany. The players articulate the tones with or without natural harmonics at one of the three octaves. Finding a willing quintet is another matter...

Related question from the sharpshooter-ear - Is that one A-half-sharp
33/32? I don't remember hearing it with 11/8 so I wasn't sure.

Good notes! (I had fun playing along on my brother's old viola.)

Completely smile-inducing! What a treat to start the week, I love the slow section that really pokes you in the eye with the tiny notes. I'd love to hear this on a nice steel string acoustic too.

Are you aware of the beautiful guitar work of Mark Orton in Tin Hat Trio (now Quartet)? Not overtly microtonal, but he does a lot of slide work with real slack tunings, and the fact that he studied with Ben Johnston at least adds some spice to the influences.

That aside, thanks for the fine playing and writing on this sunny Monday...

thanks Aaron. i guess the most ideomatic finger-picking guitar styles are on
the one hand the line from early blues and bluegrass through guitarists like
Kottke, and on the other hand flamenco. I dont know what you'd call Arbor
Low or Piera - more classical oriented i guess.

thanks

thanks David- so far i only have 17 min. of music and the two earliest
pieces i cant even remember how to play live, so not quite ready for either
yet! Maybe we need to put together an east coast microtonal guitar fest.
You, me, Catler, Erlich (did he fall off the edge of the world or
something?)- we could get Neil over here as an honorary east-coaster-
anybody else?

I thought you were local. dont you live in tristate area? I seem to recall a
recent discussion that placed poole in Cali.

thats what i remembered- i thought you said you'd have to be invited because
you weren't east coast?

You are completely missing db's tongue-in-cheek humor, as this relates to a thread a week or so ago about the various guitarists that were and were not being invited to a microtonal guitar fest in the NW.

Once again, Beardsley's humor flies under the radar... :)

Cheers,
Jon

ok now i get it. well the east coast microtonal guitar fest will be open to
one and all. anyone who shows up with a microtonal guitar will get to play.
I just figured that the folks that live around here will be more likely to
show up.

So my list of folks who live around here so far is:

David Beardsley
Jon Catler
Paul Erlich
Moi

those who dont exactly live around here but would be most welcome if they
can make it here:

Neil Haverstick
Rod Poole
John Schneider
Wim Hoogewerf

any other likely suspects that should be on these lists will be added as
they are mentioned...

Neil will actually be in NYC for the fretless guitar gigs at the Knitting
Factory in late Sept, so it might be ideal to have it then?
