DX7 with E! card

i have a DX7 which i need to sell. i have posted it at
www.vintagesynths.com and craigslist san francisco.

does anybody have any suggestions on where else to post it?

i am asking $333. does this seem a reasonable price? DX7's without the
E! card are going for 250 - 300.

thanks for your help!

(BTW the E! card allows for many more microtunings to be installed and
ready to go...)

The E! Card....what a rip off!

The resolution is much worse than what it says on the instructions! Too bad for my ears!

I give my E! away for free before I sell my DX7 ...but not sure how to take it out!!!

interesting!
i have been happy with it. maybe my ears aren't as good as yours...

it always seemed that the intervals which were to be just-intoned
actually blended together without difference tones.

i wonder if there was a difference between types of E! cards???

anybody else have bad experiences with it?

Dear Miko,

There was a fully detailed message on the Tuning List 5 years ago, or more, providing full details about the tuning definition. I remember it was a tuning definition of around 1.5 cents but not sure.

The E! manual defines points as the tuning unit which the E! allows you to perform installed in the DX7, saying that there is 4096 points to the octave. If you select the clearest flute sound and tune two notes to the same pitch, then play them together and keep moving one up in points then you will definetly notice that it is the same note until you move 4 or 5 points up, you will hear a beating which will be kept the same again for another few notes ... you will definetly hear that there is no progression.

I am very mad about at Greay Matter, since I travelled to S.Francisco from UK, bought a DX7 and the twice to a remote village to get E! installed and another time to pick it up. All this trouble to get my tuning resolution right where I wanted at the time!

I am not even sure how Yamaha can allow such small company to deteriorate their image!

I wonder if anybody has tried to get the money back for this E! ???

Miko, I think you can check the tuning list messages by subject ( E! ) , but not sure, and then find out all about it!!!

hi jose antonio:
thanks for this clarification. i will go deep into my programs and see
if the same thing happens. this does sound like a rip-off.

if there is no difference before a resolution of five points, then the
resolution is about 1.5 cents. 1200 cents / 4096 points = .29 cents /
point.
i wonder why they weren't honest about it and simply claim 1024 points
per octave?? isn't it more likely a binary sequence reduction? that is
four points to the increment, rather than five?? so the resolution
might have been nearer to a cent: 1200 cents / 1024 points... or
calculating the same by another method: .29 x 4 equals just a hair
above a single cent. (1.17 or 1.16)

regardless it is not nice that they lied about the resolution of E!
card's microtonal definition. there was much less accuracy than the
quarter cent which they claimed. although i confess that the 1.5 cent
accuracy served me well enough. i suspect some of the preciseness gets
lost by the complexity of timbre.

i will try to find this article in the archives.

thanks again!

miko
