The idea of putting up music for mangling is one I like, but I prefer
to mangle midi files. Anyone have a midi they want mangled?

Sure, why not? ;-) I've just uploaded a "satiric dirge"
to the group's files, "17_1_98 06": http://tinyurl.com/ps8oy

Feel free to mangle!

Yahya

:-(( indeed ...

Go to the group's Files section, select the folder
"Yahya's music", and click on "17_1_98 06".

Or paste together whatever pieces of the following URL:

2006.mid

your browser or mailreader makes ;-)

Is this micro at all?

What about "She is such an old girl.mid"?

Glad you liked it! ;-)

Carl asked:

They both *should* be. Those are straight, unmangled,
MIDI files, without a pitch bend in sight, so in their
present incarnations they are in 12-EDO. However, I
invite you to retune them as you see fit - or indeed to
mangle them in any other musical way, in the spirit of
the original post.

For my part, I find it very tedious - using only the tools
with which I am most familiar and competent - to alter
the tuning of a MIDI file from 12-EDO to any great
degree. It's even more tedious if it's a large file.
Basically, I have to insert a pitch bend before every
note, which means separating out chord notes into
different tracks, etc, etc. Doing this makes it harder
to see what you've got. So I need to find a better
way.

You will find the results of this kind of tedious effort
in the file "Who knows.mid", also in the same folder,
along with a text file "Who knows - about.txt" which
explains the tuning and metre. (I believe I posted to
the list about that music when I put the file up, but
there were *much* bigger things going on at the time,
so I quite understandably got no feedback on it.)

One member has already sent me a retuned realisation
of "17_1_98 06" using JI. This is a much larger file
than the MIDI, so I won't post it to the MMM Files.
However, the said member is certainly free to post it
somewhere if the said member wishes!

(I guess I will have to try harder to find -
- a good way to retune MIDI files painlessly;
- an acceptable set of sounds to realise MIDI files
with; and
- a place to post the resulting Ogg Vorbis or MP3
files.

I do appreciate that these are *my* problems, and
that members of this group have already offered me
plenty of pointers towards resolving them. However,
I don't expect to do so any time soon, owing to lack
of time and energy.)

Anytime I post any music anywhere, I'd be very
happy for others to take it, play it, play with it,
"mangle it" in any way that they find musically
interesting. And I'd like to hear the results.

Regards,
Yahya
