Art and Life
05/21/2006

In the summer of 2004 my 10-year-old son started taking pictures with
my girlfriend's digital camera. Within a month he was producing a
prolific stream of captivating images that clearly indicated a talent
for experimentation and composition.

But just how do we evaluate the possible merits of a preteen's
artistic abilities anyway? Well, this is a question with many
possible answers of course, yet in the end it's one I personally
prefer to view in the same way that the great New England composer
Charles Ives once wrote:

"The future of music may not lie entirely with music itself, but
rather in the way it makes itself a part with—in the way it
encourages and extends, rather than limits, the aspirations and
ideals of the people—the finer things that humanity does and dreams
of."

Because more than anything it was my son's innocent and honest
enthusiasm for making these pictures that stood outÂ… and, in my
opinion, this is the great province of art; especially as it relates
to young people, because I honestly believe that a thing born and
perpetuated by the means of your own interest and drive is a thing no
teacher can properly teach and a thing profoundly at the root of
building a meaningful art and character.

So I will continue to encourage and promote my son's creative
pursuits, but only to the extent of his own genuine interest. Because
for me these photos represent nothing less than our ongoing
collaboration as father and son, and in that there is a truth that
transcends all talent and skill and makes art a truer part of life.

You are a wise man, Dan, and IMO this is not at all
off-topic for this forum, where we focus on the
*making* of microtonal music.

I'd like to see a couple of these works in more detail,
but your son seems already to have a reasonably
advanced notion of compositions that work.

Keep encouraging him to go where it leads!

Regards,
Yahya

thanks yahya .He's quite prolific, and always trying new things and i
do think that he has a natural talent for framing a composition and
making "something" happen...but mostly i try to stay busy promoting
and taking care of the dirty work (buying frames and making copies,
matting and wiring, etc) and try to leave the momentum of doing it in
his hands . Anyway,in no particular order, here's a selection from
this showing.
