Hi all,

Have you seen the Microtonal Music Tribe site? It's at: http://microtonal.tribe.net/

One message there, from Sami Abu Shumays, caught my eye: http://tinyurl.com/nqz6y
thus:

'New Arabic Music Podcast
I have just started what appears to be the first Arabic music podcast. I put up the third episode yesterday, an interview with Nikolai Ruskin, an amazing player of Nay (end-blown cane flute), Tabla (Arabic goblet drum), Mizmar, Qanun, Rababa, etc. etc.

This Podcast is a way for me to play more intimately than i would on a recording or in a concert, to chat about subjects of interest to me, to have conversations with fellow musicians, and in the course of all that to do a little educating about Arabic music. I hope you all enjoy. to visit the Blogpage, go to: shumays.libsyn.com to subscribe to the Podcast, put shumays.libsyn.com/rss into your podcatching client (such as iTunes). I am also listed in iTunes' podcast directory. - Sami , posted 03/04/06'

Right now, I'm listening to (and enjoying) the second of the seven podcasts already up, and have downloaded the rest for later listening. Sami is a violinist and composer, and also is a member of a new band called Zikrayat ("Memories", from the same root as "Zikr" or "Dhikr"). Their site is at: http://www.zikrayatmusic.com/. He's also a teacher; here's an extract from his site at http://www.samimusicworld.com/teaching.html:

---
'I give private lessons in Arabic Violin, and in Maqam (the Arabic modal system, similar to the Indian Raga system) through singing and listening. I teach Theory and Ear training in a practice-oriented way. I also teach other string players (viola, cello, double bass). Players of other instruments are welcome, but some instruments have inherent technical difficulties which make it hard to play most of the modes. I teach at my studio in Long Island City, Queens, New York, located right across the 59th Street Bridge from Manhattan. I am near the first F train subway stop in Queens (21st Street/Queensbridge), the first N/W stop in Queens (Queensborough Plaza), and the 7 train (Queensborough Plaza). Contact me if you are interested in lessons. Group lessons are also available by arrangement.'

Yahya

The first piece, too? I listened to it again, and it sounds like being
in an ordinary diatonic major scale to me.
(Not that it matters - it's definitely beautiful!)
Gonna have a look at the second one...
