Tuning challenge results: Smith, Smith and Lucy rule!

About a week ago, I submitted a 12-ET MIDI for a short piece called "Sunday Morning" and solicited participants who were willing to retune it in something other than 12-ET and render a sound file.

I'm happy to say that I had three takers: Jon Lyle Smith, Gene Ward Smith, and Charles Lucy, who respectively produced JI, 31-ET, and LucyTuned versions of my piece. The results are published here:

I hope to have a version at some point from Yahya Abdal-Aziz, and if anyone else wants to play, I will keep adding versions to this page as I get them.

Thanks, guys!

Wow, I love it!! What a great project. Thanks to all involved.
I'd love to see more collaboration like this. Great piece, too.

Funny, it sounds like Charles' version is at a faster tempo.

Also, did Gene render his version, or did you? For once, the
reverb there is reverb I like.

Based on the first 30 seconds, I like JL Smith's version the
best.

More later... finishing up the MMM Day compilation.....

Glad you like it. See, Carl, I do more than drones. :-)

Yes, Charles did increase the tempo, I think I mentioned that. In his mail to me he said "I have increased the tempo slightly to bring it to 103.13 b.p.m. (A=440Hz converted to tempo)."

Gene did his own rendering, as did all the participants.

Dave,

You sure do! I'd love to hear more music from your 'past' as well, even if not microtonal. I enjoyed JLS' version, it seemed the most integrated between ensemble and temperment.

Cheers,
Jon

Tx.

By the way, I noticed these files aren't at the same loudness,
making them harder to compare.

A great way to losslessly (yes) fix this is mp3gain!

http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/

Everyone should use this on their mp3s!
