I'm directing this question at all of you who have
already tried some different web hosting options for
your music:

Where's the best free site to post music to get it heard?

Regards,
Yahya

There is no good answer. For my own music, I've used Myspace.com,
Soundclick.com, and ZeBox.com, and all of them were dissappointing for
different reasons. Myspace has the best exposure, if you don't mind
the four song limit. I prefer Soundclick because there is only a limit
on how long a piece can be, not on how many you have. None of them
(that I know of) allow hotlinking.

For other people's music, Yousendit or Megaupload are the only options
I know of, and both of those expire fairly quickly.

Also, many of them only allow .mp3, which is unfortunate if you prefer .ogg.

Speaking of formats, does anyone have experience with "weedshare"?
Apparently it's a format that's designed for selling music through
p2p. You can send weed music files to anyone you like, and they can
listen to it a few times for free. After that they have the option to
buy, and the person that send them the file gets a small cut, a la
pyramid schemes.

I personally wouldn't use it because it's based on freakin' WMA (why
the heck would they do that?!?!)... but I thought the concept was
pretty cool, and might easily be implemented in an open format.

It's a good idea (that I had first), but unfortunately it requires
DRM, specifically Windows Media DRM.

Because it's the only audio format (in wide use) with built-in DRM.

Soundclick seems to be the one most often used by microtonalists. Why
do you say Myspace has better exposure? Better how?

Aside from being a product of the Evil Empire, what's wrong with it?

DRM is to me an unacceptable thing, any time, any place. I think
Microsoft is, on the other hand, a great company, and their
Windows Media codecs are very good.

More people other than people you tell about your site are likely
to find it.

It's not perfect, but it sure is simple.
I thought Yahoo's e-mail service provided 250 MB.
(Gosh,my free hotmail account has 250 MB of space.)
If this is true
I'm sure Yahoo has the capability.

Stephen,

I can't quite tell what is your comments and what is Yahya, but I think you wrote:

>Can't Yahoo just increase the amount of memory in the files section?

But they won't, they don't respond to user requests, and the Yahoo system is notoriously slow for file transfer, not to mention mangling quite a few files. Don't think we haven't tried things like this in the past (those of us who have been here for a while). Most people look to other solutions for posting their music.

Cheers,
Jon

They could but they haven't. Why not write them a letter?

Better yet, why not join the 21st century and get an http
server?

Because of the memory limitation, we have set up additional groups
specifically for posting files. For example:

/tuning_files/
