One possibility: the Afro-Cuban religion Santeria? I believe offerings of this kind would be in order, and if it was a santeria-related ceremony/offering, there would/could have been some very intense music, as while each orisha (deity) has not only a color and element associated with it, but their own characteristic set of rhythms played for the religious rituals.
But it is only a barely-educated guess, to prime the pump...
