I was hoping for some feeback on my first two microtonal
musical posts. I realize it's the holiday season, so I
don't know if anyone has listened to them or not. I can tell
you right now that there is nothing here that will change
music as we know it.

Possible replies:

A) sounds like 12 to me
B) that's 30 seconds I'll never get back
C) I found them useless, but high school kids
might like them
D) Ouch, my ears!
E) a perfectly adequate first effort

In files section:

C#xmsus-C#xm-Ax-Gx-F#.ogg (about 15 seconds)

C-F#xm-Ax-Ex.ogg (about 15 seconds)

Hi Stephen,

I like them. You should make longer versions! I am curious how your keyboard is laid out, because for me 24 notes per octave are simply too much to play with.

Thanks so much for the positive feedback. I'd like to, perhaps
in the distant future, actually compose some pieces I could put
my name on and feel good about. Don't feel this is the time, nor
do I understand 12 EDO music theory. (can't even read music
really). What would result is the usual "I don't know what I
did or what I might have done."

My keyboard is a DGX-205 (Yamaha).

see keyboard here:

http://music.yamaha.com/products/main.html?
hierarchyId=1&groupId=24&productId=47

Then click enlarge.

I use a strip of poster board that I tape across the keyboard when
I play in my 24 note scale. There are two colors. Orange and blue.
The orange must line up with the "C"'s and the blue with the
"F#"'s. The ninth note from the far left is a C. What would be the
next C, has to be the F#. A half inch area on the poster board
above that note is blue, to remind me of that.

It took me a long time to get to this point. (bad memory on top
of it). It is possible though. Large hands help. The nice thing
about 24 (in whatever form) is that at least everything lines up
the same in each 2 octave (ie. 1 octave now) group.

Do you have the orange and blue colors only above the C's and F#'s (every other C on the keyboard)?
It doesn't hurt that you have a pretty wide keyboard I guess (76 keys) :)

This is true for a number of 22 note tunings I use. I simply leave
every "E" note on the keyboard out of the mapping. Or you can
physically take them out of the keyboard and move the other keys closer
to fill the space as Steven Rezsutek and Kalle Aho have done.

+++++++++++For this keyboard in 24, going across the full keyboard,
I have orange/blue/orange/blue/orange/blue. So 3 C's and 3 F#'s
in 24.

It doesn't hurt that you have a pretty wide keyboard I guess (76
keys)

++++++++++ I usually end up staying in 2 octaves in 24 anyway,
but better too many keys than too few.

Paul

I'm not interested in 22 at this particular point, but
I must say I never even thought of the things you mentioned
below. One must really be into 22 to
"physically take them out of the keyboard and move the other keys
closer
to fill the space"

Still on vacation and have some time. I could download some 22
stuff if you have a link.

Thanks,

What can I say. Go Kalle!

Three pieces in 22-equal are under my name here:

http://www.angelfire.com/music2/aah/microtonal/list.html

But I like a lot of other 22-note tunings too!

76 is wide these days?

For what I have ended up doing this year I have found 76 to be
just fine. The octaves can be moved up or down electronically
too, so you actually get even more. S. Szpak

Stephen,

I finally got them to download (think the trouble
was with my download manager).

I liked the sound of the first 'sus' one.

The second one (23 seconds long according to
WinAmp) was fine, except at around 12 seconds,
a couple of chords sound decidedly out of tune
compared to the rest.

Reply E)++ !

Look forward to hearing more music from you.

Yahya

I re-checked but I think I played the correct chords
the correct way:

C-F#xm-Ax-Ex

You probably were hearing the C major triad and then
the F#x minor triad. Listening to this today, I think
I'm hearing what you are. I had to choose at least one
western 12 EDO chord, but the choice could have been better.

At least once on some list somewhere I asked about chord
progressions. Consonant ones versus dissonant. Wanted some
sort of table. Guess I was right. I can't trust my ears.
