Somehow, I feel that string quartets are the one of the worst mediums for
microtonal composition. Yes, I have recordings of the Johnston quartets.
they're the reason I say this. For all I know, they may be playing
totally accurately, but it just sounds out of tune to me. I'd rather
listen

The end of your message seems to have been cut off. For now, please
note that there are at least two completely different groups of
players playing different pieces on those Johnston recordings. To my
ear, the group playing the middle quartets had excellent -- even
unbelievable -- JI intonation (though of course "out of tune"
relative to a 12-equal standard), while the group playing the last
quartets had horrible JI intonation (read: everything sounds like 12-
equal).
