A small correction

List,

In an earlier post, Gene Ward Smith mentioned the following:

>the fact is you can already produce sounds which are clearly musical using >electronic means, even if they tend to horrify Jon.

Somehow Gene has completely missed the fact that about 90% of my recent work involves electronic means, and in fact the last large-scale piece was entirely electronic, entirely virtual (with the possible exception, if one is entirely anal-retentive, of the the fact that I utilized some samples of some of my acoustic percussion). Far from being horrified by "electronic means" (if ever there was a vague description!), I've actively worked with three different developers in encouraging (and in one instance, actively working on the beta/debugging team) the implementation of microtuning capabilities. I'm pleased to see that one of the companies, LinPlug, has just announced a new hybrid FM VST synth that is the third instrument they have released that contains microtonal support through direct importing of .tun files.

I find an awful lot of things in this world "clearly musical", and a lot of them relate to how, and how well, those resources are used. I wouldn't want anyone on this list to get the impression wrongly (as I believe in the power of truth) from Gene.

Thanks for the mention, Gene, and the opportunity to clear this up.

Cheers,
Jon

The point is, gasps of dismay over how they are used seem to come from
you rather often.

But I'm glad you do understand truth is something to take seriously,
and that there is a power in it. Since politics has already wormed its
way into this thread, I'll remark that it seems to me that "nothing
else matters" is the Bush administration line. But events have shown
that the truth has a way of mattering.

Gene,

Nope. You are mostly just counting in a very personal way, I would imagine. Don't forget, there are a lot of places to discuss music besides the tuning lists.

The rest is OT and I don't want to damage s/n more than I already have.

Cheers,
Jon
