Hi All

Forgive me if this has been covered recently, I haven't
been at the board for a while.

I've been thinking about recording one or two very
basic songs(?), if one could even call them that, and
posting them here.

I have a computer, keyboard and Scala. Is it possible
to record something (I have been playing using my 24
note scale) with what I have? Not sure if I want to, just
asking right now if it is possible.

Thanks,

Stephen Szpak

I use Audacity, which is a free download, or FTS, which is shareware,
to record music.

I checked out what I'm pretty sure is FTS here:

Fractal Tune Smithy

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Oct04/articles/pcmusician.htm

It says $14 to $45.

This seems to be the Audacity site:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

I'll check them out. Thanks.

The Audacity site seems down (at least for now, couldn't
get the download to download).

If both of these programs were free, what would be
the better one [and why]?
Just want to take my scale out of Scala and play and
record with 20-ish note polyphony and touch sensitivity
for now. But maybe more in the future. I have
limited desire to learn how to use software.

I wouldn't actually know, I use Audacity as pure sound recording, and
Fractal Tune Smithy as a virtual keyboard. I haven't gotten around to
really learning either of them. Most of the composing I do is along
the lines of piano-roll punching, very abstract and methodical, and
for that Scala and Audacity are enough.

Since Audacity is recording off your sound card, it would be a simple matter of starting it up, start up FTS, get ready to make your music, switch to Aud. and start recording, and then switch to FTS and start playing. Audacity is a real nice tool when I simply need to capture audio from the sound card, like recording Kyle Gann's webcast radio show.

And if Robert Walker is reading this, he is probably already figuring out how to implement recording in FTS, or he'll be telling me it's already there! :)

Cheers,
Jon

Audacity is an excellent program to do basic recording with. After you have recorded a piece, you can go back and edit if you like (trimming the beginning and end, altering volume, lots of other tweaks), and then you can save it in one of the common formats for sharing files online, either mp3 or ogg. It should be all you need, which is pretty cool considering it is free.

Cheers,
Jon

As an alternative to FTS, you could roll your own synthesizer with PD
(puredata.info), which is a graphical programming environment. That
sounds like it's a little more involved than you want right now ;)

Anyone can respond here...

So:

I've got my computer on, keyboard on, Scala set to my
scale and I'm playing. I hear the notes through my
computer's speakers. Audacity is started up with its
opening screen.

How do I record some notes? (what do I click on, etc.)

{{Will they go onto the hard drive until I put them on a CD?}}

Stephen,

As for your questions on how to record and the general process for doing what you want to do, I am sure that all the answers are contained in the manual. Digest that and then come back if you have any more detailed questions:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/manual-1.2/

Any hints in all this from anyone is fine.

In Audacity:

In File |Audio Preferences | Audio I/O my (musical) keyboard
in not shown as a possible candidate in the dropdown
menu. Neither as a 'playback device ' or a ' recording
device ' . Is *this* normal?

Playback device is Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output.
Recording device is Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input

Microsoft Sound Mapper is your sound card, that means every sound that
goes out through your speakers will go into Audacity. What you're
going to want to do is wire up your keyboard so that it plays into
Scala, then just hit Record in Audacity and it should go straight
through.

As for how to plug your keyboard into Scala, you'll have to ask
someone else that.

In Audacity there is a menu with these choices:
(center of screen)

Stereo Mix
Mono Out
Phone
Line In
Microphone
CD Player

Does it matter which one I use?

I'm trying to record something (anything) from the
musical keyboard. Scala set to my scale.( I've tried
a couple of them from the menu above. )
