The Yamaha VL1. Brian McLaren has done some amazing saxophone
stuff with this synth. Here's a bassoon sample (played with a Yamaha
WX7 wind controller)...

...too bad this was done pre-mp3. The sampling rate on the
au file leaves much to be desired.

The VL1 was expensive and monophonic, and Yamaha abandoned
the technology. 10 years later, the power of physical modelling
is finally starting to show up in software synths. . .

No, no! ;-)
There's still the VL70-m and I'm still using it with several midi or
midi-fied instruments.

Ah, I looked for it the other day on their web site, but couldn't
find it. Glad to see they're still making it!

Did he use alternate tunings with the VL1 or just rely on playing
technique to get the desired pitches?

Patchman Music (http://www.patchmanmusic.com/yamaha.html) is probably
one of the better places to get a VL-70m, especially for those looking
for a package deal with a WX5 wind controller.

Chris Graham over on the windcontroller group is working on his own
wind controller, which he eventually plans to offer for sale. He
wishes to incorporate microtonality-friendly features but needs
potential user/customer input on the specifics.

And here's his wind controller website:

I don't know.

Great! I was a brass player... are there any woodwind players
in the house? Maybe this should be cross-posted to Tuning also.
