Study for Kyle Gann

In honor of his wonderful neo-Nancarrow work on the 'Studies for Disklavier'
disk, I make this humble offering and dedicated it to Kyle Gann, the spirit
of Conlon Nancarrow, and the inspiring 'impossible keyboard technique' made
possible by the same:

http://www.akjmusic.com/audio/StudyForKyleGann.ogg
http://www.akjmusic.com/audio/StudyForKyleGann.mp3

(as always, I'll recommend to .ogg for quality, and delete the .mp3 upon
uploading my next opus.)

does anyone want to guess the tuning used? ;)

enjoy!

best,
aaron.

Killer! As usual, very high quality, polished material. Love the
subtle panning on answering phrases. I'd love to hear this on a
bar-room out-of-tune-piano patch sometime. Let me know if you ever
make the midi of it available.

Kyle will be pleased, I'm sure. And you continue to impress.

Cheers,
Jon

He is probably still subscribed, but he is quite busy with writing, teaching, and other duties AFAIK. If you haven't written to him directly about the piece, I'd drop him a line: kylegann att earthlink dott net

Hello, my ilk,

It's true I'm really busy, but the busier I get, the more creative my attempts to
procrastinate become, and sometimes I find myself with no choice left but to read through
the last few dozen posts at MakeMicroMusic. So I reach that state again this morning, and
lo and behold the first thing I see is my name! That's happened before - it's like when I'm
mentioned here, some thoughtwave goes out and I start getting an unconscious stirring
that I'm supposed to check in. But I read here a lot more often than I write in. It's always
interesting.

Aaron, what a delightful piece! I echo the comments that it's really charming and well-
made, and the ending gave me a good laugh - just like the laugh I get from some of
Nancarrow's endings, like Study #6. I'm very honored. Thank you. The only other work
with my name in the title is a piece by my former student Drew Schulze who wrote a
microtonal minimalist piece called "Philip Glass and Kyle Gann Make a Baby," which I was...
not quite as honored by. Anyway, "Study for Kyle Gann" has already gone up to Postclassic
Radio, where it will be heard in the next 17 hours!

(Got the mp3, can't seem to open the ogg on Audion 2, for some reason. I do pretty well
for a technical illiterate.)

Again, I'm truly honored.

Cheers to everyone,

Kyle

Actually, it inspires me to get back to two similarly MIDI-sequenced piano pieces that I'd
recently worked out tunings for, both in 13-limit. I've never completed a piece in anything
beyond 11-limit, and I feel like I can really do it this time. Thanks for the inspiration.

you missed a series of posts about psychic phenomena on metatuning, too ;)

The honor was all mine, really! Steve Hillyer and I througly perused your
'diskclavier disk' at our quasi-weekly listening session a few weeks back,
and I was really enthralled. I *really* loved them--some of your best work
that I've heard!

Anyway, they were inspirational to me, even going beyond Nancarrow as an
inspiration in some ways.

Cool, that's great! :)

??? I'm not a Mac guy, so I can't help you unfortunately...I guess this is the
reason that's it's good to still post occasionally in mp3 format.

You do honor to me to feel honored...
