Who would you hire?

Hi gang. Jack Douthett and Chris Shultis at the University of New
Mexico are working to put together a composer's symposium in March of
2007. There is funding to bring in a big name, so the question is, who
are the big names in microtonal music? Big names do not necessarily
mean good guest composers, though, so alternatively, who would be an
interesting guest composer for a microtonal symposium?

Kyle Gann. If you need the 'name', James Tenney. An alternative might be Terry Riley. I'm very impressed by both Gann's composition and his dialogue on the state of composition at this point in time.

Cheers,
Jon

Kraig Grady would certainly "be an interesting guest composer for a
microtonal symposium" -- especially if he got to speak *and* perform
some of his acoustic (and some of his electronic) music!

Jon Szanto and I are thinking in the same circles. I'd lean more
towards Gann, since I love his writing, though I prefer Riley's music.
Riley's writing, on the other hand, makes my skin crawl.

If you're asking what I think you're asking, I would suggest
Herman Miller, Prent Rodgers, Aaron Johnson, and Bill Sethares.
You might not be asking what I think you're asking though.

It seems that they should do some research themselves and pick who they like.
It seem in bad form to have others make their decisions for them.

That is what they are doing. As part of their research, they asked me
for suggestions. As part of my research, I am asking you folks for
suggestions.

They will make their own decisions after having done some research,
which includes me asking the list. I would appreciate your input.
