Is this going to be uniquely a live festival or are you intending to invite electronic works and/or host installations?

James! Good to see you 'round these parts. Looks like you've been
busy since I last checked out your site.

Kraig, have you seen this?

A 22-tone guitar? Fabulous idea!

I hope to participate a bit more in some of the excellent discussions. I've kinda taken over from my wife Alison Monteith, well it's a bit complicated, but anyway it's good to see you guys mmm'ing the way you do.

Right, here goes. About 5 or 6 years ago I subscribed to the tuning list using my wife Alison's email address. I lurked for a bit then started to post. Don't know why but I found the whole thing very intimidating, so when people said things like, Hey, cool, Alison and so on I stuck with it (such was my distaste for flames and all that stuff). Anyway I stuck with it to avoid problems and that was fine for a while. Problem is, my music is being played all over the world now and as such people get to know you so I've had to come clean by and by. Let's just call it a pseudonym. Sincere apologies to all - no disrespect or malice intended. Tell you what though, I got a tad more respect from some quarters being my wife, except when electric guitars were on the menu (must be a 'guy' thing) and I did get one or two interesting offers off list (no names to protect the guilty).

To musical matters now. It's been such a struggle getting microtonal music played that I've had to look for new ways of presenting it that will get performances. Hence the installations and multi-channel avenues. Then you realise that microtonality and psychoacoustics have a lot in common with the plastic arts dealing with perception which in turn opens new doors. I'm a microtonalist through and through despite the problems and I've gone back to the Partchian instruments to look at ways of combining them with electronics and modified field recordings. I'll be releasing some new music in the months to come. I've just rejigged an earlier piece, Slow Kotekans Breaking, as a 4 channel work for sine waves using the Eikosany (infinite thanks to Kraig and Erv) which I thought would be an interesting piece for the Chicago event, hence my query. Alison sends her love.

Thanks Kraig. We'll see what the organisers say. I found out recently that doing a doctorate in composition I can access funding for important research and performance opportunities. Maybe I'll get over the pond in person. BTW 'Hannah Throwing Stones' was accepted for my PhD portfolio which in all modesty might be a first for an Eikosany piece. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step and all that...

Well my suggestion would be to allow for multi-channel pieces, only because I have a couple and audiences seem to like them. Bottom line for a discrete 8 channel installation is a nice space and 4 stereo systems (ie 8 speakers), ordinary matched household systems will do, or at the top end, 8 active speakers which are often found in college music departments. Half everything for 4 channel work. I'd give it a whirl because it allows you to have something running during the day with concerts in the evening.
