Hi John,

This, more than anything else about the "compositional methods"
thread that I've read here or written myself, is the best description
of what I usually experience too. In fact, that last sentence is
*exactly* (literally word for word) what I've said sometimes to
people when they ask me about it. (ooh... more synchronicity...)

And we're not alone; many other composers have said the same kind
of thing.

One of my favorites is when the leader of Beethoven's string quartet
complained about the difficulty of a piece, and the master responded:
"Do you think I have your whining little fiddle in mind when the
great Creator speaks to me?".

Another favorite is (Lizard King) Jim Morrison describing the
composition of the first (and best) Doors album: "There was this
fantastic rock concert going on in my head, and I was just taking notes."
